Review: "On the Rocks" Finds the Humor Amid a Midlife Crisis

Scene from On the Rocks (2020)
One of the hardest things to be in life is cool. It's something that we all thrive to be, though the older we get, the further out of touch we're likely to be. The esteem to resonate in ways that you did as a teenager, following trends, and having all the energy in the world slowly starts to fade, and there's some sadness in this revelation. Like DEVO in 1981, director Sofia Coppola is through being cool. She doesn't have it in her anymore. With her latest personal exercise (her most vulnerable since Somewhere), she finds ways to explore that transition period when the world begins to feel more jaded, unable to connect in these significant ways. What it lacks in immediacy it more than makes up for in terms of fun comic chemistry between Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. Everything may meander, but it all builds to self-acceptance that we all face as we continue through time, finding ways to accept whatever lies beyond being cool. It may not be trendy, but it's inevitable.

Review: "Boys State" is a Vital Look at the American Ideology

Scene from Boys State
One can make the argument that the AppleTV+ documentary Boys State is the most essential American movie of 2020. With an election on the horizon that has been considered one of the most crucial in this nation's history, it feels like a good time to take a hard look at the values, the way that society comes together and decides what is deemed worthy of leadership, and question what they're ultimately about. At the end of the day, nothing in Boys State matters. It's a mock election where power disappears the minute that they hop on the bus home, leaving their campaigns a distant memory. And yet, there is an intensity and importance to it that is undeniable. It's a microcosm of a bigger picture, of teenagers on the precipice of their own adult lives and running for office.

If children are our future, what can be gathered from Boys State is how much there is to be hopeful and cautious of. While there are leaders, there's also mob mentality, where candidates run solely for the rush of approval they get by compromising better values for cheap sentiment. Again, nothing really matters, and yet what co-directors Amanda McBain and Jesse Moss achieve is something profound. This is democracy in action, birthed before the viewers' eyes in ways that slowly mold into something familiar. If the future has reason to believe in change, they're going to need to try harder than bully tactics.

Bill Murray Reminisces in Perplexing First Trailer for "On the Rocks"

Scene from On the Rocks (2020)
It was only a year ago that things were looking much different for AppleTV+. Many saw it as a third-tier streaming service, unable to compete with the big boys like Netflix and Amazon Prime. While they don't have much of a reputation yet, there is some silver lining that has cropped up during the pandemic. Starting with their Tom Hanks war movie Greyhound, they have been creating a more prestigious aura about them, including a recent word of mouth success in the documentary Boys State that may be one of the best titles of the year.

With On the Rocks, they are continuing to expand their appeal with a film from the Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola, teaming up with Bill Murray for their first movie since Lost in Translation. In a year where streaming services are standing to dominate the Oscar fields, it's interesting to see this film as another potential upset, presenting yet another reason why this could be an unorthodox year. If nothing else, this looks to be the most upbeat and warm Coppola movie in years, shining through a trailer that promises to deliver a good time for all involved.

Composing Greatness: #13. The Freshman Class of the 2010's - "Moonlight" (2016)

Scene from Moonlight (2016)
Welcome to Composing Greatness: a column dedicated to exploring the work of film composers. This will specifically focus on the films that earned them Oscar nominations while exploring what makes it so special. This will be broken down into a look at the overall style, interesting moments within the composition, and what made the score worth nominating in the first place. This will also include various subcategories where I will rank the themes of each film along with any time that the composer actually wins. This is a column meant to explore a side of film that doesn't get enough credit while hopefully introducing audiences to an enriched view of more prolific composers' work. This will only cover scores/songs that are compiled in an easily accessible format (so no extended scores will be considered). Join me every Sunday as I cover these talents that if you don't know by name, you recognize by sound.

Review: "The Lighthouse" is a Discomforting Hallucination of Pure Joy

Scene from The Lighthouse (2019)
In the world of Robert Eggers, the idea of isolation is a horrifying reality. His debut The Witch followed a family outcasted to the edge of town, forced to deal helplessly with the demons that lay in the forest. It was a horrifying film, exploring the struggles of faith as personal demons ate every character whole. The same can be said for The Lighthouse, with two men watching a lighthouse and doing everything to stay sane on an abandoned island. Unlike The Witch, The Lighthouse falls more into the realm of a dark comedy, becoming more disturbing in its humor as each bottle of liquor goes down, eventually splashing over their chins as they dance recklessly. They can't escape the island until the storm passes, but how long will that be? A day, a week, a month? It's a tale of survival that finds Eggers once again diving into the muck of humanity to find something equally repulsive and amazing. With a career-best performance by Robert Pattinson, the film is a haunted sea shanty that will drive everyone nuts - and that's only half of the fun.

Review: "The Death of Dick Long" Finds Perplexing Substance in Stupid Mistakes

Scene from The Death of Dick Long
When pitching his previous film Swiss Army Man, director Daniel Scheinert suggested that it was a film where the first fart was hilarious and the last made you cry. It ended up being an odd little film that garnered him and co-director Dan Kwan a cult following. However, the prolonged fart joke did raise another interesting question: how long can one joke be funny? In Scheinert's first solo movie, The Death of Dick Long, he attempts to answer that question with the familiar blend of tragedy and humor as a man tries to hide the embarrassing death of a friend from the public. The incident itself is barbaric, even absurd, but it plays with the familiar struggle of tone in ways that suit the director just fine. The running joke may be far less funny this time around, but it does help to explore a different side of toxic masculinity: living with mistakes that you'll never recover from. It's funny, it's sad, and another minor hit in the anti-comedy landscape.
