With the many lists and essays written on the subject of film, there has been one thing that The Oscar Buzz has tried to understand: Who is my favorite of the film world? For 10 weeks this summer, I will be exploring this with a countdown of the Top 50 names based on a numerical ranking of ratings from various sources, the following is a list of directors who rank above everyone else. With occasional upsets, this is intended as both a discussion opener as well as a better understanding of me as a film critic and fan. Please enjoy and leave any comments you have regarding the entry's selection.
WES ANDERSON
Years Active: 1994-present
Films as Director: 8
Oscar Wins: 0
Who: There is a particular question that comes when discussion Anderson's body of work, notably if he should be taken seriously. If anything, he has become more distinguish and cartoonish as his career has gone on. However, he is also producing some of his most assured work during this time. With a familiar stable of actors, he manages to create films that have a distinct symmetrical style rooted in storybook visuals and deal with dysfunctional families in ways that are often whimsical and have a deeper poetic core. His confidence and ability to make his niche into a positive has helped him earn a rather unprecedented success at the box office and implicates that his fan base will only continue to grow as more people find the magic that is present in his work.

WHY DO I LOVE?
Scene from Moonrise Kingdom |
Anderson is a director whose work is definitely an acquired case. I can understand if his twee artfulness is offputting to audiences. However, there's something so singular and profound about his films that make them such a joy to watch. At their heart, they are tales of familial bonds hidden under whimsy and an aesthetic so congruent and beautiful that each frame feels like a family portrait. It may be at times cartoonish, but that isn't a bad thing when considering his approach manages to incorporate outdated styles and make them feel fresh and exciting. With his past three films, I do feel like he is at the top of his game and producing some of his most realized work. I can only hope that this continues.
