Here's a Look at the 683 New Members of The Academy

Mark Rylance in Bridge of Spies
It has been awhile since we received any significant Oscar-related news. Of course, that is to be expected following the annual ceremony where one season ends and the cooling off period carries into August and September. However, there is some good news regarding new members. According to President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, there are 683 new members who will be joining this upcoming season. It is a record amount and almost double of last year's hefty total. On top of that, Isaacs' plan to overcome the Oscars So White fiasco by having a more diverse group by 2020 is starting to take effect. Read on to discover how exactly that is as well as the name of each and every new member, plus a few credits to help you pick them out of a line-up.

As anyone knows, this past season marked the second year in a row that the acting categories featured nothing but white nominees. It created quite an outrage. It also doesn't help that the Academy members are overbearingly white. While there were many fiascos that followed, Isaacs has been true to her word and has produced a new membership plan that includes quite a bit of diversity. As this chart that The Academy provided below, you'll see that while not a runaway majority, there's a decent amount of diversity popping up:

To summarize, there's 27% female and 11% people of color, which may not be impressive until you count the previous totals. As people have noted, these things need to take time, and The Academy has thankfully done wonders to at least work on their diversity problem. In fact, the choice to add 683 members is itself impressive and reflective of the aggressive plan. The only question now is if it will make any difference whatsoever. Will we be seeing far more diverse Oscar nominations next year? Who knows.

The following list features a nice variety of fields and talents. Among the list is the familiar Oscar nominees and winners. Last year's winners such as Mark Rylance (Best Supporting Actor - Bridge of Spies) and Brie Larson (Best Actress - Room) are both on this list as well as varying talents ranging from Greta Gerwig and Andrew Garfield to Abbas Kiarastomi and even three Wayans: Kennan Ivory, Damon Jr., and Marlon. Yes, 2/3 of the team that brought you White Chicks is now Academy voters. There's also endurance test Nicolas Winding Refn, who may fall on the weirder side of new faces.

Without further ado, I will let you read the names for yourselves. I will skip the regular commentary, as there's way too many names to give proper credit. If you have any opinion, please feel free to leave it in the comments and maybe we can talk about the Class of 2016, and see if they actually make a difference towards making the Oscars a far more interesting place.
