The Directors Project: #10 - David Fincher

Scene from Cinema Paradiso
With the many lists and essays written on the subject of film, there has been one thing that The Oscar Buzz has tried to understand: Who is my favorite of the film world? For 10 weeks this summer, I will be exploring this with a countdown of the Top 50 names based on a numerical ranking of ratings from various sources, the following is a list of directors who rank above everyone else. With occasional upsets, this is intended as both a discussion opener as well as a better understanding of me as a film critic and fan. Please enjoy and leave any comments you have regarding the entry's selection.

DAVID FINCHER

Years Active: 1983-present

Films as Director: 9

Oscar Wins: 0

Who: Despite making his debut with the problematic Alien 3, he has gone on to be one of the most eviscerating, gritty directors working. His films often have violent undertones that deal with the frustrations of the male psyche and their placement within society. He finds a rebellious streak that when placed alongside often cold cinematography, he finds something deeper. As his career progressed, he also became one of the prominent endorsers of mixing realism with technical feats, including the art of creating entire backdrops on a computer. Despite this, his work hardly feels dated and his energy hasn't become tired. If anything, his maturity has made him more artful and able to experiment more freely with what can be done with bigger budgets and source material that asks for unapologetic anger to be portrayed in the most human way possible

WHY DO I LOVE?
Scene from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The magic of Fincher was something that I discovered gradually after being impressed by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It didn't so much use technology to enhance the look, it enhanced the narrative. While there are some obvious aspects that needed it, he is so slick with his camera tricks that I admire him. Also, his adaptations of gritty novels and challenging narratives makes him almost seem like a bad boy of modern cinema. His legacy is defined by frustrated individuals wanting to make a difference, and he manages to make it work each and every time. His films are always memorable and have a lasting appeal that counter-argue the amount of effects he uses as being a "crutch." He understands cinema and how to entertain in ways that not too many directors nowadays do. He always manages to make non-franchise films pop with life and excitement.
