Scene from The Irishman (2019) |
For many Oscar fans last year, nothing was more debated than where you could actually see Roma. Given that Netflix maintains a fraught relationship with most major theater chains, it continues to loom large as a problem impacting their current plan to do slow rollouts for several of their Fall 2019 films. Among them is the hotly anticipated Martin Scorsese epic The Irishman, which has gained acclaim as one of the director's finest movies. But, where could you possibly see a film released by the Oscar-winning filmmaker? Up until now, the answer would be to do the familiar hard work of Googling or going to Fandango to find answers. Thanks to Netflix, there's an even easier option out there now.
Like most cinephiles of a certain age, Scorsese is intent on keeping the theatrical experience alive. It's one of the reasons his collaboration with Netflix seemed a bit confusing at first. The streaming service's reputation has largely been questioned. Many think that Roma lost Best Picture this past year because of its botched limited release schedule. Considering that it was impossible to see it in most midwest states without a significant drive, one has to wonder what the appeal is. Well, the good news is that Scorsese's film at least has more of an attractive market and the promotional team has gotten the film out there fairly well.
With a release planned for only a few weeks from now, there's plenty of concern as to where you can see the film. Well, Netflix has set up a website here that allows you to find out. Considering that it's one of the must-see events of the year, you'll want to make sure that you know where to go, provided you want to see it in a theater. Otherwise, just wait a little bit. The first Netflix movie this Fall to get a theatrical release, The Laundromat, already is available for streaming a little over a month later.
It should be noted that while this is going to be a thorough website with every available theater, it's not going to be complete just yet. While a lot of places have their spots lined up, other smaller chains have yet to finalize their plans. Considering that the movie runs more than three hours, that's going to be quite a commitment. So, if your theater doesn't show up right away on the list, hold out hope that it may be showing up one of these days.
The Irishman promises to be one of the biggest movies of the Fall season and may help to make Netflix more of a legitimate resource for theatrical entertainment. Right now the fight continues and nobody knows if chains like Laemmele, AMC, and Regal will ever buckle to the stress. Maybe they will when the film breaks all sorts of per-screen averages opening weekend. A lot could happen, especially given how much people love Scorsese. For now, it's time to start getting ready. So check it out and book your weekends. It's going to be a fun time.
