Failed Oscar Campaigns: "Vice" (2018)

Scene from Vice (2018)
As awards seasons pick up, so do the campaigns to make your film have the best chances at the Best Picture race. However, like a drunken stupor, sometimes these efforts come off as trying too hard and leave behind a trailer of ridiculous flamboyance. Join me on every other Saturday for a highlight of the failed campaigns that make this season as much about prestige as it does about train wrecks. Come for the Harvey Weinstein comments and stay for the history. It's going to be a fun time as I explore cinema's rich history of attempting to matter.

A24 A-to-Z: #86 - "The Farewell" (2019)

Scene from The Farewell
In case you didn't know, A24 is one of the great purveyors of modern cinema. Since 2013, the studio has found a way to innovate independent cinema by turning each release into an event. As a result, A24 A-to-Z will be an ongoing series that looks at every release from the studio by analyzing its production history, release, criticisms, and any awards attention that it might've received. Join me on a quest to explore the modern heroes of cinema by exploring every hit and miss that comes with that magnificent logo. They may not all be great, but they more than make A24 what it is and what it will hopefully continue to be for years to come.

Ricky Gervais to Host the Golden Globes... Again, for Some Reason

Ricky Gervais
Yeah, remember how The Academy Awards decided to not have a host last year and everyone loved it? Well, it turns out that The Golden Globes didn't. They decided to bring back Ricky Gervais for a record fifth time of hosting, and one can only assume that it will be more of the same from the shock jock who turned the last ceremony into a drunken mess with disregard for every award, filling every moment between commercials with hostility and profanity in what can only be described as self-flagellation that has no purpose being on TV because it's not fun to be at home and watch rich people mocking audiences for enjoying their "fun" evening. The broadcast will go on, but this awards season fan is doing everything in his power not to express how he has no plans to watch it and that Gervais gave up his humor years ago in a Robert Johnson-style bargain with the devil. Yeah, this is worse than not having a host because at least not having a host gives you dead air to fill. This is just dead weight.

Here's the Winners of this Year's Golden Globes

Scene from Lady Bird
Yesterday marked one of the first big stops in this year's awards season. The Golden Globes were a moment where actresses spoke out in solidarity as part of the new Time's Up movement, and the winners seemed to be just as politically charged. With many harrowing speeches, the night was full of a rare energy, and it wasn't without some controversy in Best Picture (Drama) winner and top winner of the night, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The following is a look at the movie winners of the night, including some thoughts on how they may shake up the Oscar race, or what they have to say about things going forward. It was an interesting night, and it was in part thanks to these surprises.

Check Out This Year's Golden Globe Nominees

It's officially that time of year. With many critics groups putting out their Best of 2017 lists, it was only a matter of time until the major awards began releasing their nominees. There are few that trumpet in the season quite like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose track record of predicting the Oscars is spotty, but paints an interesting look into what films will be discussed throughout the awards season. This year's nominees are officially here, and you can check them out below, including some commentary on the movie categories. What made the cut? What didn't? Read on to find out.

Here's the List for This Year's Golden Globe Winners

Scene from La La Land
Yesterday was a big day for movie lovers as The Golden Globes gave out awards to the best in TV and film. While this year's nominees were at times baffling (it's par for the course), the results were surprising often in a good way. With La La Land winning seven awards - the most by one film - it is looking more and more likely that Damien Chazelle's musical will take all of the trophies home come Oscar night. For those who want to know who won, keep reading. It was definitely a year of interesting diversity, and that's the perfect set-up for what this Oscar season needs. The only question is how much overlap we expect to get.

Check Out This Year's Golden Globe Awards Nominations

Scene from Deadpool
This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) released the nominees for their annual Golden Globes ceremony. Along with being one of the first major awards of the season, it is always a curious bunch of nominees to look at. This year proved to be no different, reflecting the best in drama while also giving us some semblance of potential upsets for awards shows to come. The following is a list of the movie nominees, including the good, the bad, and whatever Deadpool's Best Comedy or Musical nominations are supposed to be. Oh well, it wouldn't be awards season without The Academy's drunk cousin giving out nominations to off the wall selections. Read the list after the jump as well as personal commentary on each category.

Jimmy Fallon is Officially This Year's Golden Globes Host

Jimmy Fallon
As the summer winds down, it's time to look forward to awards season. While there's still room for late summer releases to make an impression, most of them have been moved to better release dates. Still, there's one thing that still isn't known: who is hosting the major ceremonies. Well, today brought the release of some good news for those awaiting the Golden Globes. Jimmy Fallon has been announced as this year's host. It's quite a step up over the past few years, which have brought increasingly embarrassing selections that prove that Hollywood's night to let loose should not be aired on TV. On the bright side, Fallon may be a step up from the previous holders of Ricky Gervais or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Will it be enough to rebound after a few dud years, though?

R.I.P. Patty Duke (1946-2016)

Patty Duke
On March 29, 2016, actress and singer Patty Duke died at the age of 69 in Couer d'Alene, Idaho from an ruptured intestine. Over the course of her long and storied career, she has achieved a variety of things from being one of the youngest Oscar winners for her role in The Miracle Worker to appearing in edgier adult roles like The Valley of the Dolls. Her work was vast and always challenging, choosing to take on roles that were sometimes confrontational and contradictory to her squeaky clean child star image. She leaves behind an impressive body of work that is unmatched in terms of quality or charisma as well as serving as an advocate for mental illness.

The 10 Best and Worst Moments of This Year's Golden Globes

Left to right: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Leonardo DiCaprio
Last night marked this year's Golden Globes, in which the big winners were The Revenant and The Martian. However, it is also likely the year when the ceremony itself became irrelevant to TV viewers without access to their own minibar. You see, with returning host Ricky Gervais, the show's three hour run felt like an eternity not because it was a slow year (though the winners weren't exceptional), but because nobody cared. Yes, The Golden Globes have long been The Razzies of prestigious movie awards, but usually their ceremonies are fun moments to have people let loose. The following is a look at the highs and lows of the show as it relates to Oscar culture. Prepare for a ride through the drollness.

Check Out the Nominees for This Year's Golden Globe Awards

Rooney Mara in Carol
Today, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) released the nominees for this year's Golden Globe Awards. Honoring the best in film and TV, the award has often been considered a strong indicator as to what The Oscars will look like. While this isn't entirely true, the one advantage that the ceremony has is that it honors films in both comedy and drama departments, thus allowing less prestigious titles to pick up traction. This year shows no exception, especially with the presence of a few surprising picks, including Mad Max: Fury Road, Concussion, and Trumbo. The following is a look at the movie categories, followed by personal thoughts on each of the categories.

A Rundown of This Year's Golden Globe Nominations

Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice
Following the release of the SAG Award nominations yesterday, today marks the release of the Golden Globe Award Nominations. As with every year, this is one of the most interesting/baffling award as it recognizes the best with a few films that shouldn't even be there. Thankfully, this year isn't an exception and while there isn't that many, they pop up here and there to remind you why you love this drunken cousin of an award is special. Who made the cut? Who didn't? Check out the nominations after the jump.

Calculating the Golden Globe 2014 Winners

Left to right: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Last night saw the Golden Globes ceremony take place hosted once again by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. The show itself had plenty of memorable moments and with the hosts managing to do what Ricky Gervais couldn't (not outstay their welcome), it was a night that managed to pack a lot of surprises, notably for those rooting on 12 Years a Slave to dominate in every available category. In fact, there wasn't a single film that really "dominated," though it has raised questions on how the Oscar race could change (read my nominee predictions here). As it stands, things look less concrete going forward.

The 2014 Golden Globe Nominations Are In and They Look Better Than You Think!

It is strange to admit, but it looks like this year's Golden Globes will not be nearly as much of an embarrassment as they have been in the past. After a brief glimpse, the year of movies has produced one of the strongest, least embarrassing line-ups with no confusion in the Best Comedy or Musical category. While there are some egregious omissions and some surprises, it looks to be a decent start to awards season. On the down side, my favorite whipping boy won't have too many complaints this year, which may be the biggest tragedy of all. So here are my thoughts on the awards as well as predicting the winners in each of the categories. There will also be links where applicable to posts I have written regarding the nominees.

Note: If you wish to see my thoughts on the TV portion, stay tuned to my Optigrab blog later this evening for a full post on it.

Will "This Is 40" Be Able to Add Comedy to the Best Picture Race?

Left to right: Iris and Maude Apatow, Paul Rudd, and Leslie Mann

With the upcoming release of director Judd Apatow's midlife crisis comedy This Is 40 set to open in theaters next week, there is one thing that is peculiar. While it hasn't been nearly as massive as others, many have argued that Apatow's latest stands a chance at a few Oscar nominations. As absurd as it sounds, this isn't that far fetched, considering his influence on the comedy community (he did direct this bit for the Oscars). However, is the film capable of even placing this late in the race, especially since it didn't get a Golden Globe nomination?

Golden Globe Nominations 2013 Are Here, and Guess Who Got Ignored?

It is an exciting time for movie awards fanatics. With all of the nominations coming out, we are only a month away from when we finally get a peek at what will be nominated for this year's Academy Awards! Unfortunately, the Golden Globes have always been perceived in some way as a predecessor to the event and for no good reason. Each year, they mistake celebrity for quality with very few wins for the right people. However, that's kind of why they are my favorite whipping boy. I love to criticize their choices with a heavy hand. The following is a look at the nominations that were released this morning and my brief opinions about each category.
