The Academy Awards to Allow Streaming Movies for First (and Possibly Only) Time

If you've been wondering why The Oscar Buzz has been largely quiet in the past month, it's because I'm sure as to how to open operations back up. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a lot of uncertainty, and I don't know if I have enough content to return to publishing stuff on here full time. However, there is some news that has finally arrived, suggesting that this year's Academy Awards aren't hopeless just yet. With theaters closed, one had to wonder what would happen next. Would we just be giving all of the statues to The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey? That seems ridiculous. Here's some good news, though. The first big update since the Academy Awards ceremony has dropped, and there's plenty to look forward to this season. It may not be the same, but it will definitely be an interesting one for the record books.

A24 A-to-Z: #79. "Gloria Bell" (2019)

Scene from Gloria Bell
In case you didn't know, A24 is one of the great purveyors of modern cinema. Since 2013, the studio has found a way to innovate independent cinema by turning each release into an event. As a result, A24 A-to-Z will be an ongoing series that looks at every release from the studio by analyzing its production history, release, criticisms, and any awards attention that it might've received. Join me on a quest to explore the modern heroes of cinema by exploring every hit and miss that comes with that magnificent logo. They may not all be great, but they more than make A24 what it is and what it will hopefully continue to be for years to come.

Legitimate Theater: Cry-Baby (2008)

Cry-Baby
Welcome to Legitimate Theater: a column dedicated to movie-based stage musicals. The goal of this series is to explore those stories that originated in films and eventually worked their way onto Broadway and beyond. By the end of each entry, there will hopefully be a better understanding of this odd but rampant trend in modern entertainment. Are these stories really worth telling through song and dance? How can it even compare to the technical prowess of a camera and seamless editing? Join me on this quest as I explore the highs and lows of this trend on the third Wednesday of every month and hopefully answer what makes this Legitimate Theater.

R.I.P. Adam Schlesinger (1967-2020)

Adam Schlesinger
On April 1, 2020, musician Adam Schlesinger passed away at the age of 52 in Poughkeepsie, New York after complications with the coronavirus. Over a storied career spanning 25 years, he created some of the most memorable tunes no matter what medium. In film he received an Oscar nomination for the titular song from That Thing You Do. He also was a founding member of the band Fountains of Wayne and wrote music for the musical TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It's impossible to summarize everything that he left behind, but it's likely that if you've so much as turned on a radio or TV, you've heard his work. His legacy will live on with some of the catchiest music that helped to make other people better.
