"20th Century Women" to Donate Part of Ticket Sales to Planned Parenthood This Weekend

Greta Gerwig
This past weekend, director Mike Mills' latest 20th Century Women opened in wide release. If you haven't seen it, just know that it's a great movie worthy of your time. Though if you're looking for another reason to not hold off on seeing it, just know that the profits from this weekend's box office will go to a special cause: Planned Parenthood. With countless concern over the future of women's rights in the face of a new presidency, it feels appropriate that this movie centered around the lives of women in 1979 would join causes with an organization meant to help women's health. That's a pretty good deal for seeing one of the best films currently playing in theaters.

Over the course of the film, a variety of events involve Planned Parenthood. Without spoiling too much of the film, there are events involving pregnancy and cervical cancer treatment. The film was praised for its depiction of the organization. Because of this, studio A24 has agreed in partnership to donate a portion of this weekend's box office profits to the organization. President Cecile Richards said "Mike [Mills] has done a fabulous job in this film of covering real women's stories in a way that is accessible and actually generates conversations."

The director also gave further details in how the partnership was formed:
"They connected me with people who worked in [Planned Parenthood] offices in the '70s to make sure every aspect of my scenes was correct, from the language counselors used to the very particular decor and dress of the people in those offices, to the overarching philosophy and attitude of the women who worked there. It was very important to me that we capture this moment in women's reproductive rights accurately."
A24 also claims that they are doing their donations in large part because of the recent presidential administration, which they fear will be regressive when it comes to women's rights. They feel that donating and protecting Planned Parenthood will lead to security. They are also glad to see the youth getting active in protecting the rights of women. Speaking as it's hard not to want this after seeing the movie, it only seems right that this happens. It will be interesting to see how things pan out. For now, it should give you more of an excuse to see 20th Century Women, which should've been on your radar already anyways. It's a great movie now donating to a great cause. What's stopping you from going?
