Tom Hardy to Get a Tattoo of Leonardo DiCaprio After "The Revenant" Bet

Tom Hardy

Last year was a massive moment for Tom Hardy's career. In the first half of the year, he starred in the critically acclaimed and box office hit Mad Max: Fury Road. Then in the Fall, he starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the wilderness epic The Revenant. The film also was met with great reviews and an impressive box office haul that landed Hardy a Best Supporting Actor nomination. This may sound like a good thing, but there is one catch. Because of that win, Hardy has to get an embarrassing tattoo of his costar. If nothing else, this may be one of the strangest side effects of being an Oscar nominated talent. If nothing else, it's very amusing.
When DiCaprio won Best Actor for The Revenant earlier this year, he started the gratitude towards Hardy by saying that he was "my brother in this endeavor." While this is easily applicable to the harsh weather conditions and physical strain that the film brought the cast, it may as well refer to a bet that was held throughout the production of the film. While DiCaprio was more than studded with Oscar nominations, the odds turned to Hardy: a talent who more than deserved a few nominations by the time of The Revenant

In a recent piece for Esquire, Hardy discussed his bet in relation to the Oscar nomination:
Hardy bet a tattoo of the winner's choosing that he wouldn't. Hardy lost. Hardy recreates DiCaprio's design on a Post-it note for me. "He wrote, in this really shitty handwriting: 'Leo knows everything.' Ha! I was like, 'OK, I'll get it done, but you have to write it properly.'"
Hardy is quite the trooper. While the piece also discussed that he hasn't done it yet, it does reveal one of those silly ways that actors bond during production. It also serves as a nicer and tamer form of trivia for a film whose press focused on how masochistic it was to make. Maybe we'll one day get to see this tattoo that Hardy assures will happen. For now, it serves as a nice and small piece of trivia worthy of mention. It also raises the question: Would you get a tattoo of Leonardo DiCaprio if it meant getting an Oscar nomination? It might not be so bad.

  1. Tom Hardy is mad max fury road characters very great! The following year, he appeared as gay hoodlum Handsome Bob in the Guy Ritchie film RocknRolla (2008), but this would be his next transformation that would prove his extensive range and stun critics. In the film Bronson (2008), Hardy played the notorious Charles Bronson (given name, Michael Peterson), the "most violent prisoner in Britain". Bald, pumped-up, and outfitted with Bronson's signature strongman mustache, Hardy is unrecognizable and gives a harrowing performance that is physically fearless and psychologically unsettling. Director Nicolas Winding Refn breaks the fourth wall with Hardy retelling his tales directly to viewers as well as performing them outright before an audience of his own imagining. The performance mixes terrifying brutality, vaudevillian showmanship, wry humor, and an alarming amount of commitment, and won Hardy a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor. The performance got Hollywood's attention, and in 2009, Hardy was named one of Variety's "10 Actors to Watch". That year, he continued to garner praise for his starring role in The Take (2009), a four-part adaptation of Martina Cole's bestselling crime novel, as well as for his performance as Heathcliff in a version of Wuthering Heights (2009).
