Why Kate Winslet Keeps Her Oscar Statue in the Bathroom

Kate Winslet
Kate Winslet has done a lot over the course of her career. Since coming to prominence for Heavenly Creatures, she has gone on to star in films ranging from art house to big blockbusters, including one of the highest grossing films in history with Titanic. Among her bigger achievements is that she became the youngest person to receive six Oscar nominations. Despite this acclaim, she has only won once, which was Best Actress for director Stephen Daldry's The Reader, in which she played an illiterate Nazi. With this Oscar season looking to be a potential nomination thanks to director Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, it seems appropriate to hear that she's in the news again. This time, she's talking about where she keeps her Oscar statue: in her bathroom. The reasons are as comical as you think they are.

One of the most common questions that Oscar winners are asked is where they put their statue. While more commonly said to be in offices or in a trophy case of sorts, there have been various answers that definitely are tickling, including being used as door stops. However, Winslet knows what everyone else wants, which is to touch that Oscar and make our own silly speeches. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, she shares her reasoning behind this:
"The whole point is for everybody to pick it up and go, 'I'd like to thank my son and my dad. And you can always tell when someone has, because they're in there a little bit longer after they flushed. They'll come out looking slightly pink-cheeked. It's hysterical."
It's the kind of sentiment that makes you wish that you were queasy at Kate Winslet's house. Even then, she joins a long line of Oscar winners that have a sense of humor. Last year's Best Supporting Actor winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) reportedly just moved it out of his bathroom in recent months. Among the more compelling excuses is Jodie Foster, whose Best Actress (for both The Accused of The Silence of the Lambs) statues are in her bathroom because she believes that they look good next to a faucet. The stories go on and on, but it's nice to know that Winslet isn't the only one who puts it someplace odd.
