Malick's Latest "Knight of Cups" Officially Has a 2016 Release Date

Christian Bale
It has been awhile since we last have heard from director Terrence Malick. Following the success of his long awaited The Tree of Life in 2011, it seemed like he was set to enter a period of prolific output. Starting with the 2012 film To the Wonder, he had an impressive amount slated for rapid succession, including Knight of Cups - which also stars Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. While there has been a pretty good trailer that shows the old school director enjoying the modern era, it has been several months since we have heard any news about the film. Today, there's an official release date for the film that you can put on your calendar and prepare to revisit the awe-inspiring majesty of one of cinema's most unique voices.

To an extent, audiences should be grateful that there's been so many films from Malick in the past five years. Considering that he once took a 20 year gap between the films Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, it is impressive that the 73-year-old director has actually improved his track record in recent years. In fact, the two films that he has been supposedly working on would put his 2010's output to four films, which would be his most productive decade since the 70's. So while there isn't any news on Malick's fourth film, Knight of Cups looks very much like a reality, especially with a trailer.

Check it out below:

It looks like a very post-modern Malick movie if there ever was one. One can only imagine what else is in store for the director. Until we get news on the next movie, there's plenty to get excited about with Knight of Cups. For starters, the film is going to come out soon. Not Oscar season soon, but 2016 soon. According to distributor Broad Green, the film will come out on March 4, 2016. So why hold off for such a prestigious director, throwing his film into such a dead zone? It's because they want the biggest amount of people to see the film before voting. It is a bold strategy, and I am not sure that it will work, but that doesn't dampen my interest in the film at all.

For fans of Malick's meditative energy, it's going to be an exciting time come next March. For the most part, the director remains in top form with his past two films and one can only hope that it sustains as time continues. Even if it turns out to be another few years before we hear major news about his fourth 2010 film, we'll at least have Knight of Cups out there to keep us entertained and hopefully see more as time goes on.
